Owen Sound Acclaimed retirement destination

Once a key exporter of lumber to the U.S., Owen Sound, Ontario has emerged as a destination for tourists and one of the best places to retire in Canada. A world apart from the hectic pace of life in the Greater Toronto Region yet only a 2.5-hour drive from Canada’s largest city, Owen Sound has special appeal for those seeking a relaxed, outdoors-oriented lifestyle in a beautiful and historic small city away from crowds.

Owen Sound is situated on a splendid site on the southern shore of Georgian Bay. The wooded terrain embracing the southern arm of the bay is especially beautiful in autumn when the sugar maple displays its brilliant red color.

Owen Sound's tagline is

"Where you want to live" — and we've put it at the very top of our list of where you want to retire. Based on the southern shores of Georgian Bay, this picturesque community has four conservation areas totalling more than 27,000 acres, an extensive waterfront trail system and great access to boating and fishing. There are also three affordable golf courses that serve the city and six more within easy reach.

To top it all off, during April and May the city is host to the Springfest 55+ Games — an annual event that bring seniors together to compete in events like five-pin bowling, golf putting and shuffleboard.

The city offers a load of free or low-cost recreation options and very affordable housing. Even in a hot housing market, the average price of a home in the area is about $230,000, which is well below the half-million dollars you're looking at to pick up a place in Toronto.

It's an added bonus that Owen Sound, or "The O.S." as we like to call it, is just a couple of hours' drive away from Toronto, Canada's largest city.

Seven waterfalls, numerous rivers, fish ladders for spawing salmon and trout on the Gorgeian trail, Niagara Escarpment, 9 golf courses, 3 yacht clubs.

Want to enjoy the good life in retirement? Move to a smaller city
